Overview of HDMI cable types in HDMI Specification ver 1.4

In HDMI 1.4, two new types of HDMI connectors are introduced, Type D and Type E, thus there are totally five types of connectors now:

 

  • Type A, the most commonly used HDMI connector for home applications.
  • Type B, 29-pin dal link connector to support very high resolution, reserved for future application.
  • Type C, more compact connector of camcorder and other mobile devices.
  • Type D, carrys the same singals as Type A but is more compact than Type C and designed for cell phones, pocket camera and other portable devices.
  • Type E, carrys the same signals as Type A but is more robustly designed for automotive applications.

 

With the release of HDMI 1.4, there are totally five types of HDMI cable assemblies for the consumers to choose from.

Standard HDMI Cable

The Standard HDMI cable is designed for 1080i or 720p video transmission, the HD resolutions that are commonly used in most home applicatioins, such as cable and satellite television, digital broadcast HD and upscaling DVD players.


Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet

This cable type offers the same baseline performance as the Standard HDMI Cable shown above, plus an additional HDMI Ethernet Channel for networking of HDMI Ethernet Channel-enabled devices.


Automotive HDMI Cable

This cable type is designed for internal cabling of vehicles equipped with onboard HD video systems. Tested to a more robust performance standard, and capable of withstanding the unique stresses of the motoring environment such as vibration and temperature extremes.


High Speed HDMI Cable

The High Speed HDMI cable is designed to handle video resolutions of 1080p and beyond, including advanced display technologies such as 4K x 2K, 3D, and Deep Color.


High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet

This cable type offers the same baseline performance as the High Speed HDMI Cable shown above (1080p video resolution and beyond), plus an additional HDMI Ethernet Channel, for  networking of HDMI Ethernet Channel-enabled devices.
